Please Be Spring

Please Be Spring

I woke up to a snow covered Spring Bird – that is certainly beautiful but has me in seasonal confusion. Weren’t there green shoots, snow drops, and twitterpated birds yesterday? This morning, they are all smothered under snow – except for the birds who have not ceased their steamy, flirtatious courtships.

This impatience for Spring and the wishy washy seasonal progression has me thinking about Maria Carvalho’s piece that she wrote for the Spring Issue of Woolgathering in which she tells a beautiful story about a farmer impatient to plant her snowy fields and gardens. Her solution to this particular seasonal angst is to reach back to her family tradition of enticing the spring pixies with thimbles of honey.

I love this sweet story because it captures that feeling of being out of control with regards to the weather and confronting the hunger (quite literal for many) of needing to plant. There is so much trust and faith that we rely on when we grow our own food. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have a little magic, too.
