Winter Surprises

Winter Surprises

It was so lovely to have yet another contribution from writer Maria Carvalho in the Winter Issue of Woolgathering.

Maria wrote “Winter Surprise” about a pair walking through the snowy woods  – making discoveries together

I think we underestimate the surprises that winter can offer us. It really can be a season of discovery – whether it’s tracks in the snow, hearing a bird call, or seeing stars in the night or morning sky.

After some really cold weather, I have been surprised by the solidity of the creek – how it grows when it freezes – expanding up the banks. Chickadee’s call has caught be off guard several times as well as woodpecker’s drumming. And perhaps most surprising, I have been really enjoying the darkness – particularly in the morning. I find myself regretting the sunrise – preferring the stillness of the dark – enlivened by twinkle lights, of course. Twinkle lights are a universal truth in my house, and while I use them all year long, they are particularly cherished in winter.

Have you discovered anything this winter that surprised you?
