Spring Rituals: Collecting Eggs
As I wrote in the March Almanac, we lost the last of our ducks. We named our final duck Elizabeth, and she disappeared on a very gusty day. While I had imagined she found a flock to join, I’m pretty sure I found her feathers across the creek. The circle of life! If it helps at all, she was an original duck and therefore at the end of her natural life span.
So, this is the first Spring in 5 years that we will not be collecting eggs! Our ducks usually laid their first eggs mid-March, and it was a miracle each year – a sacred, Spring Ritual. I will miss it and the little quackers! I’ve grown wistful when the local mallards fly overhead.
Do you collect eggs or look for hatched egg shells?
