Snowdrops Despite Lack of Snow

Snowdrops Despite Lack of Snow

I sort of can’t believe that these snowdrops have surfaced. I mean, it’s the usual time that they bloom, but they usually sprout after several feet of snow have melted. At this point in the season, we have forgotten what the ground even looks like, and these delicate flowers seem to defy the cold and brittle world that surrounds them. They bring hope of Spring and feel like a miracle.

This year, they don’t feel earned, because this Winter has seldom felt like actual Winter. We’ve certainly had our share of Winter storms. In fact, we just experienced a frightful ice storm this week, but the weather has been warm. The snow has been scant, and we’ve gazed more at dirt and grass than white snow.

Climate change is frightening, upsetting, and damaging. In addition, when everything is out of its normal pattern, we can have a sense of unease – even if we are happy to not be digging our cars out of snow.
