Sewing Closet: Creating Creative Place At Home During A Pandemic
Like so many who are working from home while cohabitants are also working from home and schooling from home, I am becoming increasingly aware of the value of space – in particular creative space.
At the beginning of 2020, I painted our small office a deep shade of emerald green and christened it the room where I will write my novel!. I mapped out the plot and characters on the giant white board. Tacked up scribbled notecards, photos and art that inspired me. I surrounded my desk with artifacts and tokens of good luck. I was using it for about a month when the pandemic happened. The office quickly became a classroom that Spring and then a video game room in the evenings and Summer, and I was out on my ear.
I know this is all small potatoes in the grand scheme of things. Still, I’m guessing it is in some form relatable to many of us.
I have always believed that having our own space however small is empowering and necessary. When we feel safe, we are able to take creative and personal risks. We are able to be recharged and healed when the outside world is fraught and threatening.
So, I decided to take back a hall closet and transform it into a sewing closet. To be clear, my creative self has taken a hit this past year, and I have not been as active as I have in the past, but I felt called to carve out this space as an expression of my creativity and as a way of creating space for myself. I have not worked out of it, but I do fetch items from it. And just knowing it is there warms my heart a bit.
How are you managing your space during the pandemic? I know I have never wanted to sit in a coffee shop with a laptop so badly in my life!
Hope you are all doing well!
Love to you,
Anna
