Woodland Mushroom Ornament
Handmade soft textile ornament – for all seasons!
Last May, I sat – bolt upright in bed at 4:00 in the morning. I heard this horrible noise that sounded like a tearing groan. I feared that it was from one of our oak trees falling. Unfortunately, I was so horribly correct. One of our oldest trees, which must have been hundreds of years old, had fallen. Adding insult to injury, it stripped nearby oaks of their limbs in a tragic domino effect. I felt like my heart had been kicked. I cried and cried, and it is still painful to walk past this amazing tree.
Why do I tell you this horrible story? Because . . . because . . . I asked my partner, Patrick, “What do we do now?” and he answered, “We make mushrooms.”
And we did. We cut some of the oak’s limbs into logs, which we inoculated with shiitake mushroom spores. While we wait for actual mushrooms to grow (hopefully they will bloom next spring), I am making these magic mushroom ornaments.
These magic mushroom ornaments represent the hopeful, next chapter that can grow out of tremendous loss. They are a stepping stone for what is next for us, for our land, and for our trees.
They are a pleasure to make, and I hope you enjoy them hanging in your home or as a gift for a friend!
