Painted Kitchen Linoleum Floor
In renovating the cottage, we decided to paint the kitchen’s linoleum floor instead of replacing it. I had some crazy vision to paint the floor like a quilt– in tiny triangles. I chose six colors: light gray, dark gray, dark green, gold, and pink in porch paint. After securing a plan, we cleaned the floor to prepare for paint.
First, I used a deglosser (AKA liquid sand paper) to remove any sheen from the linoleum. I ended up applying two coats.
Then, I primed the linoleum with Killz . . . two coats!
After the primer dried, I sketched out the triangles using my quilting rulers. I actually decided to work on sections at opposite ends of the kitchen and work my way to the middle. So, I would draw and paint one color at one end and then move to the opposite end while it dried to do the same. I painted section by section to the whole floor was covered.
Note: Since I did not plan properly, and probably because I had the flu whilst working on this, the lines did not meet in the middle. So, I had to improvise like a quilter. You can see it below.
After the first coat dried, I went back and painted the second coat of each color, one at a time.
Since it is porch paint, you don’t have to seal the paint. . .or so we think. I can provide an update to let you know how it holds up. If it doesn’t hold up well, we can eventually replace it. All in all, we are so excited about how it turns out.
