Memory Quilts

Memory Quilts

I had the honor of sewing some memory quilts for my cousins composed of their Mom’s clothes.

Aside from being a very loving and funny Aunt, my Aunt Sharon would always encourage my sewing. Knowing I made quilts, she would ask, “Don’t you sew your own clothes?”

I would wave my hands emphatically saying – “No – no – no! I can only sew in straight lines.”

And she would poke me and insist I could do it. Eventually, I believed her and believed in myself enough to try. I have successfully made a few basic dresses for myself.

I think Aunt Sharon would be proud of me for tackling them because, as I cut apart her clothes – dismantling her blouses into fabric pieces for the quilt – I saw all of her stitches that she carefully made. She tailored her clothes to her liking – sewing darts and pleats, adding gorgeous sleeves and collars and made her clothes as beautiful and elegant as she was.

I hope she would approve of this new form her clothes have taken, and I hope my cousins take comfort in being wrapped in these quilts which I have designed to be sewn hugs.

So much love to my cousins and to my Aunt Sharon! I miss you!
