Fresh Off The Log Shiitake Mushrooms
A couple of days ago, Pat harvested this bunch of log grown shiitake mushrooms. They are our last mushroom harvest until Spring, and they tasted delicious sauteed in butter!
In actuality, this Fall, we’ve had a couple of months of harvesting mushrooms from oak logs that we inoculated in May of 2022 after one of our eldest and most beloved oak trees fell in a devastating crash. I was broken hearted by this loss, and Pat comforted me by vowing to grow mushrooms.
And so we did impregnate some collapsed oak logs with mushroom spawn, and those logs just came into fruition this Fall! The dead tree is literally feeding us – which is a crumb of comfort in the wake of its absence from our canopy.
And with that sacred vow to grow mushrooms, we cultivated a plan to explore what else we could farm in this abundant forest.
Part of that plan included the inoculation of 100 logs with shiitake mushroom spawn this past Spring, and amazingly, a few of the smaller logs yielded a few mushrooms already!
Still, we expect their full blossom to happen next Spring after it begins to rain, and it’s then that we plan on selling these “Fresh Off The Log Shiitake Mushrooms” to our communities!
For those interested in a steady supply of mushrooms in their backyard, we will be offering whole logs for your own harvest and use.
For those who would like an occasional shiitake fix, we will be selling mushrooms direct to consumer mushrooms.
In addition we are currently looking to partner with other farmers and farm stores to sell in markets, stores, and CSA’s.
So, if you are interested in eating these delicious Shiitake mushrooms, stay tuned. . . More info on the way.
If you are a farmer, farm store, restaurant, or a market who is interested in sharing in the sale of these mushrooms, send me a message!
In the meantime Bon Appetit!
