Fall: A Season To Receive

Fall: A Season To Receive

Fall is the season in which we “let go” so that we may receive.

This illustration is from the cover of the Fall Issue of “Woolgathering”, my quarterly magazine about the seasons, seasonal mindfulness, and our interconnectivity to nature.

For this cover illustration, I was picturing myself surrendering to gravity – allowing the leaves to fall around and practice receiving. In this case I am receiving through reading.

I just finished a conversation with a librarian colleague about how we fail to prioritize reading because it seems like a luxury or somehow unproductive. Even though my reading list is a mile long, I so frequently push my piles of books aside in favor of other work that I deem more valuable.

This truly makes no sense considering that I am a writer and therefore should value reading. Also I work in a library, and believe in lifelong learning. Still, it takes me a long time to get through a book.

This season I would like to examine my beliefs around reading, let go of the unuseful ones,  and build new reading habits that don’t involve me falling asleep two pages in.
