Creating Winter Spaces

Creating Winter Spaces

This image is the cover of the “Winter 2022” Issue of Woolgathering. It’s the final issue of Woolgathering, my nature magazine devoted to our connection to the seasons, and it should be landing in mailboxes today!

This year, I featured chairs on the covers of the magazines, because they symbolize our place in the world, and within the context of this magazine, they symbolize our place in nature.

We are nature! It’s where we come from, and it’s where we belong.

For this cover, I was hoping to convey the comfort that Winter can bring us as we curl up in a big wingback chair – in front of a fire, with a book, or with a cat on our lap. We can be held by this season in a way that it allows us to rest, recharge, and prepare for growth in upcoming seasons.

One of my favorite ways to restore during this season is to rearrange the furniture in my house.  Like a field mouse building its perfect, cozy nest, I like to shift things around in order to create a refreshing space to curl up and rest. Of course, since we spend so much time indoors, my interior spaces must be cozy and beautiful.

So, I am writing to you halfway distracted because I am mentally moving furniture around in my mind. I’m emptying drawers and purging their contents, and I am picturing myself in a cozy corner chair with my feet up, a cat on my lap, and staring out the window at the bare trees.
