Spring and The Worm Moon

Last week we welcomed the Spring Equinox and March’s full moon – which is sometimes referred to as the “Worm Moon.” Last week, we also said goodbye to my father-in-law, Pete, through a beautiful funeral service and family gatherings.
As many have shared over the weekend, Pete was an avid gardener who was most happy when his hands were plunged into dirt. Not only did he cultivate delicious berries, veggies, hardy kiwi, greens and so much more, he nourished the most beautiful, rich soil. He saved every scrap of food for his compost because Pete knew what was important in life. Whatever he was going to grow had to start from goodness.
Pete had a way of focusing on the good, but was so capable of tending to the dark places with his gentle, bright smile. He moved through the garden and the world with a quiet grace. Luckily for us, he rooted his green philosophy in so many communities, including in me and Pat. We try to be like Pete at Spring Bird – tending a compost pile, sharing with the birds, and sharing with others who are in need (a habit we could tend to with more commitment).
So, this Spring and in each Spring to follow, we will be thinking of Pete through all of our weeding and seeding, we will cry in grief at the loss of our grandfather gardener, and we will smile when we see a worm, because the worm is doing Pete’s good work.
Wishing you all a happy and beautiful Spring!
